Early in the pandemic, NewsHour’s science team noticed that although there were resources to see the most current case data, it was difficult to see that data over time. My goal was to create a visual that showed the progression of COVID-19 cases from the beginning.

The data was sourced from Johns Hopkins University’s COVID-19 dashboard. In After Effects, I used JavaScript-based expressions to assign values from the data to the size and shade of each country’s circle to create a worldwide bubble map. I wrote the expressions so that I simply had to import the new data and tell the program how many days to show, which let me easily update the map when needed.
